The environmental impact of conventional cleaning products

De milieu-impact van conventionele reinigingsproducten

Cleaning products are something we use almost daily to make our home a well-maintained place. A space that has just been cleaned smells good, is healthier and offers a clean environment to live in. However, we often do not consider the impact that cleaning products have on the world we live in.

While conventional cleaning products may keep our kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms clean, they are doing a disservice to the natural environment.

Let’s take a look at the impact of the packaging of most cleaning products, their contents and how they reach millions of consumers.

The impact of packaging.

One of the top three factors that contribute to the negative environmental impact of cleaning products is packaging. This is not surprising as most conventional cleaning products are sold in a plastic spray bottle. With the current plastic crisis, single-use plastic is definitely avoidable.

The impact of the content.

While the packaging of cleaning products can be very unsustainable, the ingredient list also has an impact. Phthalates, quaternary ammonium compounds (QUATS), perchloroethylene, phosphorus, triclosan, ammonia or chlorine are just a few of the environmentally harmful chemicals on the long list!

Most of the cleaning products we use at home eventually go down the drain. While many of the chemicals in conventional cleaning products can be filtered out in wastewater treatment plants, not all of them are and some continue to pollute rivers and seas, damaging vegetation.

The impact of transportation.

When we purchase mass produced cleaning products from a major manufacturer, chances are the product was made many miles away from us and had to go through several stages of travel to get to its destination.

All that transportation has an environmental cost, although you may not realize it; trucks, ships, and other transportation methods all use fossil fuels to ship their goods, meaning every commercial product you buy has a fractional, but measurable, impact on the environment.

Transport will always be there, but here it helps to make it as efficient as possible. Conventional cleaning products consist of up to 90% water and are packaged in bottles that are not stackable. This is anything but efficient because water often comes from the tap in people's homes.

BRAUZZ. tackles the problems.

BRAUZZ. succeeded through a lot of research and development to bundle the essence of cleaning products in a refill system. How does it work? You buy a sustainable refillable bottle once. You fill it with water at home and pour the refill in. After a few seconds you are ready to clean. This way you stop paying for disposable plastic, water and unnecessary heavy transport. Simple.

1

Fill the bottle with tap water.

2

Cut open the sachet and pour the contents into the bottle.

3

Screw the atomizer onto the bottle. Done!

4
